Gust Avrakatos was a CIA officer who served during the 1970s. He played a key role in the agency's covert operations in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion and occupation of the country. Avrakatos was known for his unorthodox methods and his ability to cultivate relationships with Afghan resistance leaders, including Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and Ahmad Shah Massoud. He was also involved in the Iran-Contra affair, where the U.S. secretly sold weapons to Iran to fund Contra rebels in Nicaragua. Avrakatos retired from the CIA in 1984 and later became a successful businessman. He passed away in 2005 at the age of 68.
